I didn’t avoid Animals because I didn’t understand it.
I avoided it because I didn’t need it.

For a long time, music functioned as shelter. Not escape in a naïve sense, but refuge—something you could enter without staying alert. Pink Floyd’s earlier records excel at this. They unfold slowly. They give you room. They allow you to listen without bracing yourself.

That mattered to me more than I realized at the time.

Comfort, when it’s available, quietly shapes how you listen. You don’t notice it doing the work until it’s gone.
